Anuj first reached out to me months ago from Houston. He had seen one of my previous shoots in Banff and said, “This is it. This is where I want to propose to my girlfriend, Tuyen.” He wanted something quiet, scenic, and unforgettable. Moraine Lake had left that kind of impression on him.
At first, I was hesitant. I had already shot in Banff not too long ago, and even though I love it, the travel and planning involved can be a lot. But after our first few conversations, I knew I had to say yes. Their story hit home. Two people from different backgrounds, blending cultures, and choosing love. It resonated with me more than I expected.
We mapped out a plan to pull off the proposal without raising suspicion. Tuyen was told they were doing a couple’s photo shoot while vacationing in Banff, and I was just a local photographer they had booked for fun. Simple enough.
I flew in from New York and landed at 11:30 the night before. Barely slept. We met at 4:30 in the morning, grabbed the shuttle to Moraine Lake, and made our way in the cold pre-dawn air. Even though it was June, the wind had that early morning mountain chill that hits a little harder when you haven’t slept.
We hiked up to one of my favorite lookout points just as the sky began to light up. The lake below us was still and glassy, reflecting that soft blue glacier tone Moraine is known for. I had them stand on a large rock ledge, the kind that gives just enough drama for a cinematic backdrop without going too far.
Then came the moment.
I told Tuyen to face away from Anuj for a pose I had in mind. When she turned back around, he was on one knee. No words. Just that quiet stillness of the mountains and a moment that changed everything.
The rest of the shoot felt like a dream. The sunrise hit just right, the light danced across the lake, and there was something incredibly raw and genuine about the energy between them. It was no longer just about the proposal. It became about capturing who they were, right there in that slice of time.
We wrapped the shoot, hiked back down, and by the time we parted ways, I felt like I had made two new friends. It is rare to walk away from a shoot feeling more filled than when you arrived. But that is exactly what happened.
Second time in Banff, and I am so glad I went back.
